Ekaterinburg’s HIV Centre Responds to Women, Children and HIV
On the basis of the above mentioned information, it is necessary to make a system of medical and psychological supervision of HIV-positive children and children born from HIV-positive mothers, living in families, orphanages and hospitals, to educate both specialists in HIV/AIDS and people having HIV/AIDS, organize work of children’s entertainment center (the pilot project in Ekaterinburg), which will give an opportunity to mothers have some free time to solve routine and medical issues.
Pilot towns and cities:
Kamensk-Uralsky, Serov, Verkhnaya Pyshma, Ekaterinburg, Kirovgrad (these are the towns in the Sverdlovsk area that are the most unfavorable in terms of children’s abandonment).
Goals:
- To create the system of medical, psychological and social support for HIV-infected children and children born from HIV-positive mothers, living in families, orphanages, and medical institutions.
- To reduce the inherited stigma that is associated with HIV/AIDS.
- To prevent social abandonment.
Focus groups:
- HIV-infected children and children born from HIV-positive mothers, living in families.
- HIV-infected children and children born from HIV-positive mothers, living in orphanages.
- HIV-infected children and children born from HIV-positive mothers living in medical institutions (hospitals).
- The personnel of the orphanages
- The personnel of children’s hospitals that are in the pilot project.
- HIV-positive mothers who have children.
Aims:
- To increase the knowledge of the personnel, parents, and close relatives who take care of such children about HIV/AIDS with the help of seminars and trainings.
- To have regular individual consultancy works with the help of MDT in the families.
- To organize education of the volunteer workers to work in the children’s entertainment center.
- To organize the work of the children’s entertainment center and the hot line to help HIV-positive parents.
- To work out and publish information leaflets on feeding and taking care and treatment habit of HIV-positive children.
As the result of this project we expect to reduce abandonment among HIV-positive mothers in the Sverdlovsk area and reduce discrimination against HIV-positive mothers and their children.
