Russian Babies and HIV

A total of 3,249 children have been born from HIV-infected mothers including 731 born in the year 2005. In May, 2006, 80 children with prenatal contact of HIV-infection were born, out of these 80, 73 have received some form of antiretroviral preventive therapy.
Of the 188 children born to HIV-infected mothers that have been diagnosed as HIV positive, 179 have been orphaned. They range in age from 0-6 years.  In special municipal orphanages in the Sverdlovsk area there live 50 children. 44 children live in Ekaterinburg; 7 live in the Leningrad region on a constant residency; 74 children have been adopted and 4 children have died.

There are 178 abandoned children registered in the Sverdlovsk Oblast. At the moment 51 of them live in Baby orphanages, and 39 in the infectious diseases departments in hospitals. Living in orphanages and hospitals brings to psychological and physical development delay.
